The Ishmael Network Reading List
These resources are suggested by readers. Ishmael Network members can add their suggested readings by logging into their record here...
Please note that this list is neither compiled nor reviewed by Daniel Quinn. It should not be assumed, therefore, that he either endorses these books or agrees with the comments made about them. This statement holds true for the Ishmael Webmaster as well....
As of Monday, September 6, 2010 there are 838 books in the suggested reading list. Here is an easy to print list of everything...)
- Boomeritis by Ken Wilber has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Hummer Pleshe...and Hummer has this to say about the book: "The impact is kind of like my second reading of Ishmael in wich I had to go back and write out extensive notes because the story was so different. I'm still working one it, and his other books, but Boomeritis is a good beginning :-)"
Check out and/or Order Boomeritis from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Brave New World by Aldous Huxley has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Heike Rohde...and Heike has this to say about the book: "The counterpart of 1984 by Orwell. If 1984 is the essence of communism then Brave New World is the essence of capitalism. Both novels show how the things work and why both ways-if you work them out to their extreme-are terrifying.
The main character of this book feels that something is missing in this wonderful, peaceful, "advanced" world. Sounds familiar?"
Check out and/or Order Brave New World from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Brave New World Revisited by Aldous Huxley has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Heike Rohde...and Heike has this to say about the book: "Brave New World, the novel written in 1931, has it's follow-up. Brave New World Revisited, written in 1959, is no novel. It's written by a man frightened of the speed of his own fiction becoming true. If you agree with Ishmael, you will disagree with some of the arguments and ideas. But you will find some similarities too. And it's very interesting to read the thoughts written quite a long time ago (or short, however you see it) that describe exactly what we're facing right now: population growth, the mechanisms we use to stop the development of diversity, and our problems growing to the extent that we seem to create a life not worth living anymore."
Check out and/or Order Brave New World Revisited from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Bringers of the Dawn: Teachings From the Pleiadians by Barbara Marciniak has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Tarael Thorpe...and Tarael has this to say about the book: "It offers an "off the planet" perspective that resonates with the vision of Daniel Quinn. It is a light hearted guide to becoming aware of the "bigger picture". It offers simple shifts in consciousness that allow us to let go of the "fear ethic" that keeps members of the taker culture addicted to supporting their own demise."
Check out and/or Order Bringers of the Dawn: Teachings From the Pleiadians from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Brother Frank's Gospel Hour by W.P. Kinsella has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Terrence McDonald...and Terrence has this to say about the book: "While chiefly a book of fictional, comic short stories, the characters in "Brother Frank" (who appear as well in some of Kinsella's other books, though not the famed "Shoeless Joe") live on an Indian reservation; there is a strong sense of community, of give-and-take among its members, rather than the capitalist food chain we now live in. They are very funny and honest stories."
Check out and/or Order Brother Frank's Gospel Hour from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Bruy My Heart At Wounded Knee by Dee Brown has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jeff Mandrell...and Jeff has this to say about the book: "I read it just after finishing Ishmael, and it is a perfect example, page after page, of what "Takers" do to "Leavers"!!!"
Check out and/or Order Bruy My Heart At Wounded Knee from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee : An Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Paul MacAvaney...and Paul has this to say about the book: "One of the first to present the radical idea that
there is another story behind the "settlement" of
America. Deeply moving."
Check out and/or Order Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee : An Indian History of the American West from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- By The River Piedra I Sat Down & Wept by Paulo Coelho has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Nabil Asaad...and Nabil has this to say about the book: "I didn't put this in at first because I prefer Coelho's The Alchemist, but the similarities between this book and The Story of B just hit me. It is the story of Pilar, a strong and restless young woman who catches up with a childhood friend, now a priest, after several years. He has a gift for healing and they both have to choose between their feelings for each other and allowing the other to follow their destiny."
Check out and/or Order By The River Piedra I Sat Down & Wept from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept by Paulo Coelho has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Vera Brown...and Vera has this to say about the book: "Though some may not be as taken in with the story as I, the book does have some relevance to Ishmael readers. It is the spiritual journey of a woman, Pilar, discontented with her state of being--desensitized and going through life keeping away from extremes. The book challenges the way people tend to shy away from thinking that anything's wrong."
Check out and/or Order By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Caesar's Messiah by Joseph Atwill has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Diane Sagan...and Diane has this to say about the book: "Who wrote the bible. It shows the lies that Christians are believing. "

Check out and/or Order Cannibals and Kings from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

Check out and/or Order Cannibals and Kings: The Origin of Cultures from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Cannibals with forks: The triple bottom line of the 21st century by John Elkington has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Craig & Jennifer Martin...and Craig & Jennifer has this to say about the book: "The triple bottom line pretains to a new ideal in business moving forward. The balance of social justice/responsibility, environmental sustainability and the economic bottom line. John Elkington draws attention to the shift in corporate culture to have a strong emphasis on the triple bottom to remain viable into and beyond the next millenium. He has worked closely with Paul Hawkin "The ecology of commerce"."
Check out and/or Order Cannibals with forks: The triple bottom line of the 21st century from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Capitalism 3.0 by Peter Barnes has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Daniel Franco...and Daniel has this to say about the book: "He's come from an economics background to describe a way we could get back on track in short order, without violence or famine. Very practical suggestions for things we can do."
Check out and/or Order Capitalism 3.0 from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mike Marquand...and Mike has this to say about the book: "This was one of my favorite books long before I was introduced to Daniel Quinn. However, in "My Ismael" Quinn writes about a concept that is very well illustrated by this book. He talks about people, mainly youth who are so repulsed by society that they choose to obstain from it in anyway they can. Even if it means sacrificing there own health and safety. "Catcher in the Rye" does a good job at illustrating a character who is clearly in an environment which doesn't suit him. He sees something fundamentally wrong with the culture that surrounds him, and spends the entire book searching for something else. Without ever knowing what exactly is wrong with his environment or what it is that he's searching for, he abandons stability in all of its forms just so that he can get away from whatever it is he's so disgusted with."
Check out and/or Order Catcher in the Rye from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Brian David...and Brian has this to say about the book: "our lives, our society, the "power" of humans...these things are temporary and illusiory"
Check out and/or Order Cat's Cradle from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

It touches on new age thought, metaphysics, and looking at things differently."
Check out and/or Order Celestine Prophecy: An Experimental Guide from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Cera Marshall...and Cera has this to say about the book: "A great novel about a Native American caught between Taker and Leaver worlds."
Check out and/or Order Ceremony from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Chalchiuhite Dragon, The by Kenneth Morris has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Dan Seymour...and Dan has this to say about the book: "Although a fantasy novel, it is worthhwhile read as it places us in the day-to-day world of the ancient Toltecs/Aztecs. Their spiritual world has a deep connection with the forest reminding us that "nature" is not seperate but integral. (Formerly available in trade paper edition under ISBN 0-312-89001-X. Check closeout bins!)"
Check out and/or Order Chalchiuhite Dragon, The from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Changes in the Land by William Cronon has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Gail Marquis...and Gail has this to say about the book: "This book presents the ecological history of colonial New England, from approximately 1600 to 1800, basically describing how colonizing destroyed the original ecosystem."
Check out and/or Order Changes in the Land from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Changing Planes by Ursula K. Le Guin has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Karl Berry...and Karl has this to say about the book: "I thought Le Guin managed to interpret many of Quinn's ideas in a purely story form. I don't know if it was intentional or independent, or if she's even read Quinn, but anyway, it seemed that way to me.
It is a collection of thematically related stories about other worlds, and hence, I suppose, technically science fiction. On the other hand,
the other worlds are clearly parables for various aspects and fates of our planet and our species. There's an amusing conceit framing the book, that you visit these other
"planes" (worlds) from our airport lounges, which exist in their own special space/time -- so true, so true."
Check out and/or Order Changing Planes from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Chapterhouse Dune by Frank Herbert has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mitchell Haugen...and Mitchell has this to say about the book: "Frank Herbert hid some jewels inside a sci-fi facade! The Dune Series, and more specifically Chapterhouse, is a lesson in causality, non-duality, the realities of 'power' and the constructs of 'Taker' civilization and its structures. Know your enemy. Know how they think. Know what ou can and can't effect. Valuable teachings."
Check out and/or Order Chapterhouse Dune from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Children of the Earth...Remember by Schim Schimmel has been suggested by Ishmael Network member David Farver...and David has this to say about the book: "It describes, in words young children can understand, a great forgetting much like Daniel Quinn refers to. It describes the earth as a living entity, and humanity who once lived as the other animals do, as her children, but as we became so numerous, began to forget how we are just part of the family of living things on this planet."
Check out and/or Order Children of the Earth...Remember from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Circle Houses by David Pearson has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Matthew Paulus...and Matthew has this to say about the book: ""Circle Houses Speak To The Soul. Though the natural world is filled with innumberable circles, it's amazing how unusual circular houses are, at least in industrialized society. But among nomadic peoples, round-shaped homes have since time immemorial served to shelter families, echoing natural forms."....so reads the back of the book. More importantly, this book provides yet another alternative to mass produced and usually environmentally toxic tract housing. There are numerous examples of whole communities living quite comfortably in Native American style Tipis, Gypsy style Bender tents, and Mongolian Yurts. They're warm, dry, and comfortable. They work. You don't have to be forced to live houses that contain formaldihyde and a host of other noxious chemicals."
Check out and/or Order Circle Houses from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Civilization One by Christopher Knight has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Christina Dawson...and Christina has this to say about the book: "A very interesting look into the possible unit of measurement used in neolithic structures.
A great example of how much we have lost in the great forgetting."
Check out and/or Order Civilization One from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Civilization will eat itself by ran prieur has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Karissa Hummel...and Karissa has this to say about the book: "independent publication only (seattle author), worth finding, its inspiring"

- Code Complete by Steve McConnell has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Charley Quinton...and Charley has this to say about the book: "If a software designer is also a community builder and a DQ fan he or she should find many paralells. This is a cohesive and wholistic view of software design and is a must for the enlightened computer enthusiast."
Check out and/or Order Code Complete from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Coming Back To Life by Joanna Macy has been suggested by Ishmael Network member russell smith...and russell has this to say about the book: "this book offers some real life practices to connect with the web of life. what i liked best was doing this with a group of people, great connections."
Check out and/or Order Coming Back To Life from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Coming Home to the Pleistocene by Paul Shepard has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Alex Guillotte...and Alex has this to say about the book: "This book is a study of humans before the "agricultural revolution". Check out and/or Order Communities Directory: A Guide to Intentional Communities and Cooperative Living (Communites Directory, 3rd Ed) from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Confessions of an Economic Hitman by John Perkins has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Thomas Maurer...and Thomas has this to say about the book: "This is a story of covert modern day taker expansion. It describes how Americans go into third world countries and encourage them to industrialize. As these third world taker governments pursue economic development they displace indigenous communities living within their national borders."
Check out and/or Order Confessions of an Economic Hitman from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Confessions of an EcoWarrier by David Foreman has been suggested by Ishmael Network member tobias nitschke...and tobias has this to say about the book: "Foreman clearly sees the danger in our destruction of the natural world; he makes a clear argument for the conservation of BIG wilderness, for the sake of wilderness, including the grizzly, salmon, and all other (incredible) creatures out there besides ourselves... He's shown in his life and actions one way to make a difference and also presents the data needed to convince anyone that we have to make a difference. Great stuff!"
Check out and/or Order Confessions of an EcoWarrier from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Connections by James Burke has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Robert Lloyd II...and Robert has this to say about the book: "Presents examples of how scientific discovery and historical events affected each other (the book is based on Burke's famous BBC/PBS series and he's done several other works in the same vein.)"

- CONSILIENCE - The Unity Of Knowledge by Edward Wilson has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Kenneth Fusco...and Kenneth has this to say about the book: "Consilience is the term biologist and author Edward Osbourne Wilson has coined to describe the interlocking of all our arts and sciences by a relatively small number of natural laws. To my mind Wilson is a kind of Ishmael for the scientific community. Ever since Descartes science has been burdened by a mechanistic view of nature and the cosmos. Wilson seems to be one of the few real scientists making any real attempt at reconciling science with life and nature. And his vision includes all life including modern man and his culture but not seperated or above the animals and not as an end in himself. The Evolutionary affirmation of life expressed in Ishmael can be seen to run through all of Wilson's sociobiological works including this - his latest work."
Check out and/or Order CONSILIENCE - The Unity Of Knowledge from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Contact by Carl Sagan has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Erik Cheski...and Erik has this to say about the book: "It shows that "civilization" isn't the be-all end-all, and it also allows the reader to witness some cool spiritual dialouge that (altough Mr. Quinn would probably doubt it) can inspire, answer questions, and allow a new awareness to be revealed. Some parts, though, do praise Mother Culture and her ways, but if you're able to get past that, the knowledge gained is worth it."
Check out and/or Order Contact from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Thomas Pipan...and Thomas has this to say about the book: "The ideas of Walsch are kind of fitting into the world of Ishmael but in a more personal way."

- Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Claire Hess...and Claire has this to say about the book: "This book really expanded on some of Quinn's ideas. - Coyote Medicine by Lewis Mehl-Madrona has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Gus Steeves...and Gus has this to say about the book: "Dr. Mehl-Madrona is the quintessential Leaver raised in a Taker society. While he studies "modern" medicine, he trips over arrogant surgeons and ridiculous, often lethal practices... and realizes something is WRONG here. For him, the solution is Native American healing and this is his tale of bridging the gap between the good aspects of Taker medicine and the ancient, effective Leaver spiritual healing he grew up with.
"Coyote Medicine" carries an important message: Personal healing (or, for that matter, global healing) CAN happen if you really believe it can."
Check out and/or Order Coyote Medicine from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Cradle to Cradle by William McDonough has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Warren Fritze...and Warren has this to say about the book: "Cradle to Cradle is about redesigning consumer goods to fit into the fabric of life on a long-term basis, rather than "hole to hole", from resource site to garbage dump. Very good book."
Check out and/or Order Cradle to Cradle from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Crazy Mountains - Learning from wilderness to weigh technology by David Strong has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Pamela Shapiro...and Pamela has this to say about the book: "Strong talks about a need to become aware of the values embedded in our current society in order to be able to change them, or see them for what they are. He makes a strong case for the viewpoint that our quanitity-based, economic and scientific framework is no more objective than qualitative value."
Check out and/or Order Crazy Mountains - Learning from wilderness to weigh technology from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Naomi Cook...and Naomi has this to say about the book: "This book is incredible and makes so much sense. It gives a whole new meaning to the words "Visualize world Peace". It shows the practical, everyday meditations we can all do to bring harmony to our lives and the lives around us. It also gives the tools necessary for a collective goal to be met. It's all in our minds, baby! We really do have incredible power in this world, we just forgot, like so many other things, what we've always known. It's time to remember!"
Check out and/or Order Creative Visualization from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

- Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton has been suggested by Ishmael Network member George Gilman...and George has this to say about the book: "Written and set in 1940's South Africa (shortly before the institution of Aparthied)this novel follows the lives of several people, both black and white, as they try to come to terms with the chaos resulting from the destruction and assimilation of the tribal cultures by Taker colonialism. Told from the viewpoint of a Zulu minister, the story follows his efforts to deal with the social disintegration of his village and his family.
Whereas Daniel Quinn helps us intellectually understand the mechanics of the Taker expansion and it's devestation of Leaver cultures, Paton lets us experience us the deep, intestinal, emotional trauma of this tragedy in intimatley human terms. One of the leading minds in the fight against Aparthied throughout it's history, Paton is a gifted poet and superlative storyteller. As you progress through the book you suffer along with the characters in a way I've rarely experienced in a book. I whole heartedly recommend this novel (as well as his many other works)to anyone interested in adding a deep emotional urgency to thier intellectual commitment."
Check out and/or Order Cry, The Beloved Country from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

It also provides a link to Eastern religions from Western science. Zukav explores in a fun and appreciative way how the latest scientific discoveries (by 1980) point to an understanding of the Universe that allows for a sixth sense and a spiritual/material interaction."
