  • Jesus the Son of Man by Kahlil Gibran has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Thomas Wood...and Thomas has this to say about the book: "I myself have never fallen into the all relenting free faith of religion and so have in growing up harbored a resentment for the people, and their notions, who did. This book presents a empathetic and unassuming look on a subject who has been misquoted more than anyone I can think of."
Check out and/or Order Jesus the Son of Man from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Adam LaMontagne...and Adam has this to say about the book: "Eye-opening, heart wrenching love story of the ages. A must read for those who appreciate good literature and a refreshing view of the world."
Check out and/or Order Jitterbug Perfume from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Laurie Sutton...and Laurie has this to say about the book: ""This book is a classic, and shows how we can soar higher and open our minds in ways we never thought of before. Like "The Story of B," it makes us think about life in ways we never dreamed of. It shows us that our potential, and the directions we may travel, are limited only by our narrow focus. This is a book about dreaming big."
Check out and/or Order Jonathan Livingston Seagull from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Jonathon Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Michael Negrete...and Michael has this to say about the book: "This book taught me that being different is what makes us special"
Check out and/or Order Jonathon Livingston Seagull from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Journey to Ixtlan by Carlos Castaneda has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Deke Beakley...and Deke has this to say about the book: "Among Carlos Castaneda's body of work, Journey to Ixtlan is the best digest of the complete lessons of Juan Matus, the author's teacher, a yaqui indian warrior and shaman in the 1960's. Don Juan talks about the origions, purposes, limitations, properties, and alternatives of consciousness in man, and also much on the subject of ancient knowledges and how exactly the encroachment of industrial society was at that time destroying this knowledge forever (this process is nearly complete in the present day, of course.) The main lesson? You'll have to read it, but it is essentially, "what is Don Genaro's journey to Ixtlan?," and what does it mean that it is neither finished nor ever will be?"
Check out and/or Order Journey to Ixtlan from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Journey to Ixtlan by Carlos Casteneda has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Ron Bracale...and Ron has this to say about the book: "Instruction from a Native American Shaman, a member of a true remaining leaver culture, providing a very good example of a Leaver view of what it means to be Human to the fullest."
Check out and/or Order Journey to Ixtlan from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Michael Chobot...and Michael has this to say about the book: "This book, along with the Lost World, is a must read for everyone who wants to improve their mosaic of vision. This book gave me new ideas to be able to better teach those who I think need to hear all the ideas on this website(which is everyone i meet). If you want to teach this vision, you should read Jurassic Park. (and the Lost World)"
Check out and/or Order Jurassic Park from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Just a Couple of Days by Tony Vigorito has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Sonya Jayna...and Sonya has this to say about the book: "Just a Couple of Days presents a wonderful vision for the future of humanity. It's so difficult to describe it, since it is a future beyond the limitations of language. I call it a merry-hearted apocalypse, but only so long as it's understood that the word apocalypse derives from the Greek verb, apokalyptein, which means to uncover or to unveil. It's about the unveiling of all illusion."
Check out and/or Order Just a Couple of Days from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Kabloona by Gontrain De Poncins has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Kristin Oliver...and Kristin has this to say about the book: "Kabloona is the story of one of the last Europeans to see an unspoiled, indigenous lifestyle; what makes it different from other books of its sort is that Gontrain went to live with the Eskimos of Canada's harshest regions simply out of desire, out of love. To be honest, he was a little obsessed, but it was encouraging that his intellectual curiosity fueled him to observe and experience, as opposed to the normal 'veni, vedi, vici' attitude so many other explorers promote. He wasn't there to change anything, just see. However, it isn't a scholastic anthropological study, it is the personal notes of a man on a quest to find happiness and himself. Also, the author was suprisingly self aware and worked to overcome his cultural bias, considering it took place before World War 1 when cultural elitism was nearly universal. Anyway, it was refreshing to see how people are so beautifully adapted, and how happy we are in a tribal enviroment."
Check out and/or Order Kabloona from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Kids by Meredith Small has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Victoria Bugado...and Victoria has this to say about the book: "this book continues where "Our Babies, Ourselves" left off."
Check out and/or Order Kids from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Kin of Ata are Waiting for You by Dorothy Bryant has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Fanona Grace Isaac...and Fanona Grace has this to say about the book: "Kin of Ata. . .shows the power of dreaming, the thin veil of what is "real", and a beautiful culture quite different from our own."
Check out and/or Order Kin of Ata are Waiting for You from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Lamb by Christopher Moore has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Anna Schults...and Anna has this to say about the book: "It gives a fascinating spin on who Jesus really was. It tells the story of Jesus from age 6 to when he starts preaching. It's complete fiction, but I really liked some of the idea's presented. I guess it relates to the Story of B, in that such religions are the epitome of takers, but it shows a different side to that. "
Check out and/or Order Lamb from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Lame Deer Seeker of Visions by John Erdoes has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Kobin Caddick...and Kobin has this to say about the book: "This is another life-changing book like Ishmael. John "Fire" Lame Deer does an excellent job dissecting western society from a "leaver" point of view. He gives away many secrets of the Native American way of life and makes you realize that it was the "white man" chasing the "green frog skin" (a.k.a. money) that really destroyed an entire continent of leavers in a matter of a few hundred years. By explaining the ideas and values metaphorically portrayed in Native American ceremonies and dances, Lame Deer sheds some light on Quinn's overly idealistic portrayal of "leaver" culture. Lame Deer also shows that Native Americans did not lead such a savage way of life after all but had a great respect for their environment and their animal "brothers". The story of Lame Deer's life is itself fascinating and he draws many similar conclusions as Quinn."
Check out and/or Order Lame Deer Seeker of Visions from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Larry the Penguin Searches for the Meaning of life by charles belser has been suggested by Ishmael Network member jonathan k...and jonathan has this to say about the book: "another persons view on how silly salvationist religions are. fun to read too."
Check out and/or Order Larry the Penguin Searches for the Meaning of life from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Leadership and Self-Deception by The Arbinger Institute has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Court Donner...and Court has this to say about the book: "Resonating with Daniel Quinn's observation that the world will only change due to people thinking differently, Leadership and Self-Deception uses a dialogue-style narrative (also like Quinn) to convey very real ideas. This book deftly fills its outline with example after example of how one's personal thinking affects the surrounding world. An engaging and thought-provoking read."
Check out and/or Order Leadership and Self-Deception from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Leadership and the New Science by Margaret Wheatley has been suggested by Ishmael Network member haley myers...and haley has this to say about the book: "All I can remember is that both changed my life. Wheatley's book encouraged me to think about my leadership role as connected to all those I interact with, on what level I influence them, and how to amplify tenuous connections in the universe or your own network. It is fabulous and based partly on chaos theory -- there is a pattern to chaos if you let it develop over a long enough period of time. "
Check out and/or Order Leadership and the New Science from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Learning From Hannah by William Thomas, M.D. has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Lise Pellerin...and Lise has this to say about the book: "Although this is primarily a book about aging and taking care of the aging population from another perspective than our own, it is also a vision of what a culture would look and feel like that is Leaver. What changes would be needed in our perceptions and what results would transpire from those changes. Develops principles for said Leaver culture."
Check out and/or Order Learning From Hannah from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Benjamin Bormann...and Benjamin has this to say about the book: "Whitman was certain of his unity with the world. Reading his poems, though he wrote them in the late 1800s, is like hearing a Leaver people's songs and stories. Very much in step with Quinn's books and the ideas he's helping to spread. Not to mention it's simply great poetry. A deep philosophy, a deep spirituality, a deep sense of belonging, a deep understanding of the need for change, a deep hope -- all things Whitman overtly covers in his poetry."
Check out and/or Order Leaves of Grass from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Letters at 3 AM - Reports on Endarkenment by Michael Ventura has been suggested by Ishmael Network member David Kaar...and David has this to say about the book: "Deep cultural criticism, see Shadow Dancing. He also has written novels and screen plays. Check him out at Amazon or BN."

  • Life After God by Douglas Coupland has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Robert Doerzbacher Jr....and Robert has this to say about the book: "Far and away one of the best books I've ever had in my hands, Life After God did as much for me as Ishmael has. Coupland presents a series of wonderful, straightforward messages from the viewpoint of an individual raised without religeon. Easy to read in a single sitting, the author takes his audience on a compelling journey that reflects on topics such as love, happiness, and emotion in a life void of faith."
Check out and/or Order Life After God from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Life of Pi by Yann Martel has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Zoë Nathan...and Zoë has this to say about the book: "Life of Pi speaks of survival, ideology, and the spirit through the voice of an Indian zookeeper's son, who after converting to Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism, finds himself on a life raft with one very large Bengal tiger. Piscine, the narrator, dispells conventional falacies about the nature and instincts of animals, both those seen as ferocious and those regarded as harmless, cute creatures. He provides a refreshing perspective of the motivations of his sailing companion, and of the tiger's flexibility in adapting and surviving in any given circumstances. This book illustrates how animals regard humans merely as one of many curious species within the great community of life, regardless of how humans conceive themselves."
Check out and/or Order Life of Pi from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Limited Wants, Unlimited Means: A Reader on Hunter-Gatherer Economics and the Environment by John Gowdy has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Terry Shistar...and Terry has this to say about the book: "I read this book because it is on Daniel Quinn's list. The title and the academic format are a little intimidating, but most of the papers in this volume are quite readable. Moreover, the book is not just about economics--it is about a number of things that make hunter-gatherer cultures work--like various forms of sharing. The older papers at the beginning of the volume, which told about (then) existing cultures, left me feeling hopeful. The later papers, which told of the demise of many of the cultures, were more discouraging. The final papers, dealing with the future, are very thought-provoking."

Thomas points out how the concept of cellular activity is the basis for all life and can be superimposed to to higher forms of living (i.e. cell, organ, lifeform, family, community, and in Quinnian, tribe). Most cellular means of life benefits the passing of information and the success of the nucleus/tribe. This chronicle tells of how the authors, using practical methods and patience, succeeded in thier goals of living conscientiously and well. This book is an inspiration and model of a settlement in accordance with the law of limited competition. Thier goals were self-benificial yet selfless: participating in a social community was vital to what they were trying to accomplish. Although this book was written over forty years ago, it is important now, because the evils the Nearings were rebelling against have only grown. Written by and for seekers."

If you've ever wondered how tribalism could survive and flourish in an 'urban' context, this book brilliantly shows how the Atitecos have done just that... in a village of 20,000 people, they continued to breath life into (and in turn be kept alive by) a rich indigenous cultural tradition. A peek behind the curtain into the deep meaning, symbology, and power of native cultures, and a request that you too begn the work of connecting your culture to *your* place.
