  • Alice in Quantumland by Robert Gilmore has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Philip Loring...and Philip has this to say about the book: "I find that as Quantum Physics progresses, the connections between philisophy and physics becomes clearer and clearer. Quantum physics is discussing and examining the nature of being, oneness, and duality, as the Philosophers have since the pre-Socratics. I suggest a fundimental understanding of quantum physics to anyone interested in philisophical dialectical discourse. It provides an excellent point of view and juxtaposition to an otherwise amorphous school of thought."
Check out and/or Order Alice in Quantumland from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • All books by by Carlos Castaneda has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Meli Chang-Turpen...and Meli has this to say about the book: "The works of Carlos Castaneda are about leaving behind the version of reality our culture dictates, and entering into a consciousness of the unknown. These books are all about discovering freedom in it's realest sense, and making it your own."
Check out and/or Order All books by from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • All Things Censored by Mumia Abu-Jamal has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Nathan Helm-Burger...and Nathan has this to say about the book: "This book is a great expression of the inherent wrong within our culture and government. It is undeniable from reading this book that something must change. Mumia, writing from death row, points out the rampant social problems in America, especially conserning racism against African-Americans. This is a man with a powerful vision. It is well worth your time even if you only listen to the book's included Audio CD."
Check out and/or Order All Things Censored from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

Check out and/or Order Always Coming Home from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • American Indian Myths and Legends by Richard Erdoes has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Julien Barras...and Julien has this to say about the book: "it's a nice way to try to understand a culture. Learning from their legends and stories"
Check out and/or Order American Indian Myths and Legends from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman has been suggested by Ishmael Network member John Frusciante...and John has this to say about the book: "Discusses public discourse in the age of television (in fact this is the subtitle of the book), and points out how television and other forms of non-print media have driven us to become a mis-informed, isolated society. Of particular interest is his attack on Sesame Street and the CTN in general. Also check out the Roger Waters album of the same name, if you're so inclined."

  • Anatomy of an Illness by Norman Cousins has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jason B...and Jason has this to say about the book: "A great guide to the sources of illness in our society and the mental connection to physical illness"
Check out and/or Order Anatomy of an Illness from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Ancient Futures: Learning From Ladakh by Helena Norberg-Hodge has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Michele Simon...and Michele has this to say about the book: "The author elegantly describes her experiece living among this traditional culture, strugging to survive in the wake of interference from outsiders seeking to "modernize them." I'm now lending this book to the friend who lent me Ishmael!"
Check out and/or Order Ancient Futures: Learning From Ladakh from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Ancient Futures: Lessons from Ladakh by Helena Norberg-Hodge has been suggested by Ishmael Network member K Mattern...and K has this to say about the book: "Living and working in Ladakh as a translator before the area was opened to 'free trade' Helena observed first-hand the Leaver-lifestyle of the natives of Ladakh who knew how to survive in a very limited climate and environment. For example, married women each had two husbands, younger brothers and sisters joined the monastic life. These people knew how to live within their means without 'creating famine.' They understood that they did not enjoy the luxury of unlimited growth and had evolved a culture well-suited to survival in their sparse land. That is, until 'western monoculture' managed to force its way in. To read a detailed description of a functioning Leaver society with a no-growth record in terms of population, this book is unparalleled."
Check out and/or Order Ancient Futures: Lessons from Ladakh from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Animal Farm by George Orwell has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jason B...and Jason has this to say about the book: "Like 1984, a short book that gives long insights on Totalitarianism and the people's role in allowing leaders to take control of a population."
Check out and/or Order Animal Farm from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Animal Farm by George Orwell has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Paul Maceri...and Paul has this to say about the book: "Some might consider this a satire on our culture. The animals' way of life was just fine, until those who had power in their community suggested that they all must live a certain way. Of course, the rule makers are exempt from their laws (something were all familiar with, I'm sure), while also rewriting the past to justify their actions. The ending of this book delivers the weight of the message the author was intending. Just by replacing humans with animals in a political and cultural story, we are able to see things with a different pespective. After you've read this, pretend there were no animals at all in this story-just humans. At any rate, this book is also a classic and should be read just for the fun of it."
Check out and/or Order Animal Farm from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Animal Liberation by Peter Singer has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Ted King-Smith...and Ted has this to say about the book: " Anyone Interested in the views portrayed in Ishmael would probably also be interested in this book which not only describes how animals are mistreated in our "Taker Culture" but it attacks the central belief that man is superior to other animals. This book Will also give you many reasons to go Vegetarian/Vegan if you haven't already."
Check out and/or Order Animal Liberation from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Animal Liberation: A New Ethics For Our Treatment of Animals by Peter Singer has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Sean Reany...and Sean has this to say about the book: "This book is a case for animal equality. If we are ever to admit that the world is not ours for the conquering, and that we are not the only important species on earth, we have to dramatically alter our behaviour and attitudes toward the other creatures on this planet. This book is a good place to start."
Check out and/or Order Animal Liberation: A New Ethics For Our Treatment of Animals from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Another Roadside Attraction by Tom Robbins has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Doug Westlake...and Doug has this to say about the book: "Tom Robbins shares many views with Quinn and presents them in fictional stories as well. I've only read Ishmael by Quinn, and all of T. Robbins to date, so I'm much more informed on one than the other. In short, Tom Robbins is a startlingly original wordsmith in the tradition of Twain or H.S. Thompson. A fiesty Folkstylist with jazzy rhythms and multi textured prose. Tom Robbins seems to be fearless when it comes to the chore of pointing at Religion as the problem. I was dissapointed in Quinn for executing nimble dance steps to avoid coming down on either side of that debate in Ishmael. In Another Roadside Attraction, check out the debate between Tarzan and Jesus (!) towards the final chapters. Robbins pulls no punches."
Check out and/or Order Another Roadside Attraction from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Anthem by Ayn Rand has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Michael Negrete...and Michael has this to say about the book: "This book illustrates that no one system workes for every person."

Check out and/or Order Ascent of Humanity from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Asking for the Earth: Waking Up to the Spritual/Ecological Crisis by James George has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Alex Templer...and Alex has this to say about the book: "This brilliant examination of the present ecological crisis is depicted as also a spiritual crisis. The spritual crisis is what DQ discusses in Ishmael as sleeping. It offers other perspectives on the crisis and had a profound effect on me."
Check out and/or Order Asking for the Earth: Waking Up to the Spritual/Ecological Crisis from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • At Home in the Universe by Stuart Kauffman has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Hans Maverick...and Hans has this to say about the book: "This book provides the non-scientific reader an understanding of how complex systems work, particularly the interaction between a species' genetic adaptation and its changin environment. It relates to Daniel Quinn's work in that it helps the reader understand that adaptation is not a one-way interaction, but rather a cyclic process which can result in either paradise or sterility, or something in between."
Check out and/or Order At Home in the Universe from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • At the End of an Age by John Lukacs has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Marissa Cagle...and Marissa has this to say about the book: "The book relates to Quinn's works through the author's ideals. He acknoledges that we are at the end of an age, and that science and fact are only of the mind."For a long time I have been convinced that we in the West are living near the end of an entire age, the age that began about five hundred years ago." We created the world around us, and it is up to us to save it and make it work for us all. The book is much more scientific, but VERY GREAT READ...this book, coupled with ISHMAEL, helped open my eyes to the truths around me. Mar"
Check out and/or Order At the End of an Age from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Atheism: The Case Against God by George Smith has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Alvaro Cordova...and Alvaro has this to say about the book: "When I read Ishmael, I was going through a difficult time with my religious beliefs. Ishmael more or less cemented my atheism, but this book made me ask some difficult questions. Also this culture is very "God" oriented which I believe can be a problem with fundamentalism on the rise and all."
Check out and/or Order Atheism: The Case Against God from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Kate Seitz...and Kate has this to say about the book: "While this book is a tad dated and long, Rand models ONE way to make the change."
Check out and/or Order Atlas Shrugged from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Attachment Parenting: Instinctive Care for Your Baby and Young Child by Katie Allison Granju has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Laura Bouma...and Laura has this to say about the book: "If you don't know what Attachment Parenting is, you should read this book. Check out and/or Order Attachment Parenting: Instinctive Care for Your Baby and Young Child from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Autobiography of a Spiritually Incorrect Mystic by OSHO Rajneesh has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Rebel Yell...and Rebel has this to say about the book: "Osho is an amazing person with a vision of the new man. The New Man fits in well with Quinn's vision of the New Tribal Revolution. Osho teaches that you must first change yourself before you can change others. This can be done through meditation. He exposes the lies that organized religion and politics tell us is Truth. Osho talks about every topic you can imagine. Osho will change your life just as much, if not more, than Quinn has! http://www.oshoworld.com/ has more info."
Check out and/or Order Autobiography of a Spiritually Incorrect Mystic from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Autobiography of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Deke Beakley...and Deke has this to say about the book: "Frederick Douglass presents in his autobiography the account of a young man, a slave in the American South, and why he became dissatisfied with his condition as property. Douglass details how slavery affected Southern culture and of course, also what it was like to be a slave. It will seem familiar to you, as your condition is little different. Poignant and desperately insightful, the Autobiography of frederick doudlass is a quick, fascinating, and throghly rewarding read, which is as relevent in the areas of the origions and motivations of American culture as it is in the areas of Black history and civil rights. It is a massively important document, and not just to American blacks, but to all americans, and the reasons you should read it are many but boil down to: "This is NOT fiction. This really happened!""
Check out and/or Order Autobiography of Frederick Douglass from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Awakening Spirits by Tom Brown, Jr. has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Karen Huffaker...and Karen has this to say about the book: "Great book in learning Native philosophy and beliefs. • Awareness : A De Mello Spirituality Conference in His Own Words by Anthony deMello has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jeff Angelovich...and Jeff has this to say about the book: "Ishmael leaves you with more questions than you started, yet AWARENESS answers more questions that you have not even thought of. • Back To Basics: How to Learn And Enjoy Traditional American Skills, second edition by Reader's Digest has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Matthew Paulus...and Matthew has this to say about the book: "This is a book of skills, alternative skills needed to live a different way. Some parts discuss alternative power such as wind, solar, hydro-electric. Other parts discuss alternative building techniques for creating homes to live in. Developing a Water Supply, Sanitation, renewable fuel sources for heating and cooking, other enery sources from pedal power to atomic fusion (no joke, I'm reading this off page 122). • Back To The Source: The Spiritual Principles Of Jesus by Mic Hunter has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mic Hunter...and Mic has this to say about the book: "Like Mr. Quinn's books it addresses current day problems without the need for supernatural intervention. It uses the principles taught by Jesus (with no reference to whether is was the Christ or not) as a guide to making positive changes. Humor is used to make important points. Issues such as wealth/poverty, war, (mis)treatment of women, and taking care of the planet among others are addressed. It is GLBT friendly. "
Check out and/or Order Back To The Source: The Spiritual Principles Of Jesus from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Basic Writings of Nietzsche by Friedrich Nietzsche has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Daniella Fergusson...and Daniella has this to say about the book: "Nietzsche is the epitome of saying how disfunctional our society is in the postmodernist worldview"
Check out and/or Order Basic Writings of Nietzsche from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Be a Hobbit, Save the Earth: the Guide to Sustainable Shire Living by Steve Bivans has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Steve Bivans...and Steve has this to say about the book: "In this book, I equate Quinn's 'Taker mentality' with Sauron's 'One Ring', a power that lies dormant, secret for millennia, corrupting the minds of all who come into contact with it. I argue that in order to Save the Earth, we must destroy this 'ring', in other words, abandon the Taker mentality, and live more like Hobbits, in harmony with the Earth, not as masters over creatures great and small."
Check out and/or Order Be a Hobbit, Save the Earth: the Guide to Sustainable Shire Living from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Beanword, Book One by Larry Marder has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Michael Manley...and Michael has this to say about the book: "Larry Marder created the Beanworld series of comic books in the 80s and early 90s as an expression of his creativity. What he created was unlike anything you've probably ever seen in the comic book industry. The Beanworld is, as stated many times in the books, not so much a place as a process. The "beans" are a tribe: they support each other; have "laws" that say how to handle situations, not proscribe or prescribe behavior; there's even a couple of Taker encounters. I urge anyone who is looking for a non-historical exaple of how tribalism works to give Beanworld a shot. Great for kids, too!"
Check out and/or Order Beanword, Book One from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Beanworld, Book Four by Larry Marder has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Michael Manley...and Michael has this to say about the book: "See the description for books 1, 2 and 3."

Check out and/or Order Beanworld, Book Three from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Beanworld, Book Two by Larry Marder has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Michael Manley...and Michael has this to say about the book: "Larry Marder created the Beanworld series of comic books in the 80s and early 90s as an expression of his creativity. Check out and/or Order Beanworld, Book Two from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Beast and Man by Mary Midgley has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Ronald Stilwell...and Ronald has this to say about the book: "While I have no sympathy for the stated aim of the book (to find a "solid ground" for ethical thinking), it is a valuable examination of our culture's vision of "animals" (as distinct from "humans") and the ways in which we have justified our perceived exemption from the community of life. We are not just rather like animals, we are animals! And, we are subject to the same laws and processes as every other species."
Check out and/or Order Beast and Man from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Beauty by Sheri Tepper has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Sara Thornley...and Sara has this to say about the book: "Beauty is a strange twist on the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, interwoven with all kinds of other popular fairy tales, and used to illustrate the inevitable (I hope not) downfall of our society. Beauty herself is unaware of the problem at the outset, but becomes embroiled and commited to its solution. Also could be subtitled "The Last Radish"..."
Check out and/or Order Beauty from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Becoming Human: Evolution and Human Uniqueness by Ian Tattersal has been suggested by Ishmael Network member George Gilman...and George has this to say about the book: "Tattersal is a leading Paleoanthropologist and the curator of Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History. In this book he tries to understand what makes us human by explaing how "things came to be this way" - how our species came to have the unusual set of adaptations we are currently blessed (cursed?) with. He does this by first examining the social, behavioral, and physiological attributes of our closest living realatives (he is also a primate expert), comparing and contrasting them with our own. He then proceeds with a similar overview of the human fossil record, from the earliest known "proto-human" remains until the present, discussing what we can learn and infer from the various fossil discoveries in this area. I found it most valuable for the perspective it gives on evolution (and natural selection generally) especially as it pertains to "the making of us". While he demonstrates clearly that we as Homo Sapiens posses capabilities absolutely unique in type and scale from those found in our other near primate relatives (including the earlier HOMO species no longer with us), he points out that it's a misconception to view ourselves as the "pinnacle" of a process directed toward perfection. He explains the random vagaries of adaptation, exaptation, and natural selection and carefully makes the case that, for all our wonders, we should not view ourselves (or other species, living or dead) as "more advanced" or "less advanced" biologically speaking. By debunking the notion of evoltuion as a straight line of linear descent from primordial goo to human being, Tattersal gives us some science to put behind a worldview that doesn't ordain mankind as the enemy and conqueror of the earth. He also gives us a better understanding of the adaptive processes that are key to our future well being. The book is written for the layman and is meant as more of a primer to these issues than an in-depth academic study. As such it may lack the exhaustive documentary detail of his other books (which are great for deeper digging on these issues, by the way) but it is an easy, engaging read for the non-professional. Tattersal brings a refreshingly warm regard for his fellow humans and a thoughtful, even-handed perspective to the issues of our origins, our present condition, and what implications these might have for our future."
Check out and/or Order Becoming Human: Evolution and Human Uniqueness from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Being a Beast: Adventures across the species divide by Charles Foster has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Karl Berry...and Karl has this to say about the book: "The author attempts to experience the world as a badger, otter, fox, deer, swift. He's well aware of the obvious limitations, but it's still a deeper and more personal glimpse into other species than I've seen before."
Check out and/or Order Being a Beast: Adventures across the species divide from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Being Dead by Jim Crace has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Matt Clarke...and Matt has this to say about the book: "This book uses a fictional tale--involving the untimely death of a middle-aged couple while making love on the beach--to drain the fear out of death and dying. It brilliantly illustrates the connection between birth, growth, death and decay, and it is an important reminder for us humans that "no one [species] is special, no one is exempt." We are all part of the same cycle."
Check out and/or Order Being Dead from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Believing Cassandra by Alan AtKisson has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Chris Struble...and Chris has this to say about the book: "An important part of Daniel's vision is that we must understand that our current way of life is not sustainable. This book echos that idea and introduces ideas for sustainable thinking and living in an accessible way. I think if I hadn't read this book first I think I wouldn't have been ready to consider some of Daniel's ideas."
Check out and/or Order Believing Cassandra from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Beyond Geography: The Western Spirit Against the Wilderness by Turner Frederick has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Sam White...and Sam has this to say about the book: "This book describes the expansion of Western Civilization from 100 B.C. to 1890 A.D. Anyone who has read Ishmael, MUST read Beyond Geography."
Check out and/or Order Beyond Geography: The Western Spirit Against the Wilderness from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Billions & Billions by Carl Sagan has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mark Meritt...and Mark has this to say about the book: "Those who think Sagan was just an astronomer are missing out. He is extremely thoughtful about the many problems we face and suggests attitudes toward them that are very much along the lines of what can be found in Quinn.
