The Ishmael Network Reading List
These resources are suggested by readers. Ishmael Network members can add their suggested readings by logging into their record here...
Please note that this list is neither compiled nor reviewed by Daniel Quinn. It should not be assumed, therefore, that he either endorses these books or agrees with the comments made about them. This statement holds true for the Ishmael Webmaster as well....
As of Thursday, September 9, 2010 there are 838 books in the suggested reading list. Here is an easy to print list of everything...)
- Ritual: Power, Healing, and Community by Malidoma Patrice Some has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Nathan Binnema...and Nathan has this to say about the book: "Malidoma Patrice Some is an elder of the Dagara of West Africa, one of the oldest indigenous cultures on Earth. I'll have to be careful here; I understand the lesson of "The Crystals of Rapanah," and why 'Ishmael' might be wary of yet another book about an indigenous culture's practices. I don't think Malidoma's books are just another Tava stone, however. Like Quinn, Malidoma intelligently elucidates general principles of an indigenous lifestyle, and how people in the West might apply these principles, instead of merely copying specific rituals or practices. The reason I find Malidoma's books to be so valuable is that Malidoma seems to be doing essentially the same thing as Daniel Quinn: explaining the principles of a Leaver, or indigenous, way of life - and yet Malidoma says very few of the same things that Quinn does. It is very instructive to note the differences between what Quinn, a Taker, notices about Leaver and Taker cultures, and what Malidoma, a Leaver, notices about Leaver and Taker cultures. The two authors complement each other so well because they cover each other's blind spots. "Ritual" is the smallest of Malidoma Patrice Some's books, and probably the best introduction. After reading "Ritual" go on to "The Healing Wisdom of Africa" and "Of Water and the Spirit.""
Check out and/or Order Ritual: Power, Healing, and Community from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Rolling Thunder by Doug Boyd has been suggested by Ishmael Network member ben bruce...and ben has this to say about the book: "A written documentary on a Shoshone/Cheyenne medicine man named Rolling Thunder. His insights were remarkably similar to those found in Quinn's books, and they come from a man who has lived the life we all talk about on the internet."
Check out and/or Order Rolling Thunder from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Rule of the Bone by Russell Banks has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Rachel Nishan...and Rachel has this to say about the book: "Bone is another of the generation forced to fix the world before he can begin to make a life for himself. As I read this book a first, second, third, fourth, and fifteenth time, I grew up right along with Bone, seeing what he saw, realizing what he realized, and coming to terms with the world and how to live in it without going crazy. This book is excellent on so many different levels, it's impossible to take it in its entirety in one reading."
Check out and/or Order Rule of the Bone from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Running on Emptiness: The Pathology of Civilization by John Zerzan has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Xavier Sonnerat...and Xavier has this to say about the book: "The first half of the book is too esoteric for my taste and I don't totally agree with Zerzan's arguments. The second half is much better and concrete."
Check out and/or Order Running on Emptiness: The Pathology of Civilization from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Rustic Retreats by David Stiles and Jeanie Stiles has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Matthew Paulus...and Matthew has this to say about the book: "This little book takes a look at every thing from the old fashioned Lean-To, to the tree house, to River Rafts, to Wigwam, Tipi, Stacked Log Hogans, and the Yurt or Ger. Log Cabins and Writer's Retreats. Even the ancient Campfire Circle. A good book on being comfortable in the wilds or in your own back yard, anywhere you attempt to get "Beyond Civilization" to think. I enjoyed the chapters on On The Ground shelters and Primitive Native Shelters the most. Learning to work with local materials to provide one of the necessities of life can give you a new outlook on the world. Mainly, "Why would I want to kill off that which sustains and protects me?""
Check out and/or Order Rustic Retreats from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Sacred Balance by David suzuki has been suggested by Ishmael Network member david Fiske...and david has this to say about the book: "Most moving and scientific "proof" that all life is One and We ARE the environment. It had me crying in parts."

- Sacred Land, Sacred Sex, Rapture of the Deep by Delores LeChapelle has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jon Haloin...and Jon has this to say about the book: "This book offers some real solutions to the eternal question of "what to do." It shows an understading of the place you inhabit as "sacred" is essential to appreciating life. Her discussion of ritual revelals many of the specifics of how leaver communites are able work."
Check out and/or Order Sacred Land, Sacred Sex, Rapture of the Deep from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Chris Holbert...and Chris has this to say about the book: "Great insight into the public school system, specifically inner-city schools."
Check out and/or Order Savage Inequalities from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Savages and Civilization by Jack Weatherford has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Gus Steeves...and Gus has this to say about the book: "Intercultural contact promotes evolution. Isolation promotes cultural stagnation and decay. We all know that, or should. But for millennia, city folk have gradually been forgetting that crucial fact, gradually devouring other peoples and nature itself, despite the fact that tribal peoples often made their lives possible.
That's Weatherford's basic thesis, and he uses examples from all over the world -- many of them places he visited during his anthropological studies -- to prove it. Agriculture, animal domestication, cities, industry... all of them have given us positive and negative things. The problem is that we have yet to come to terms with how profoundly each of them changed how we approach each other and the world. Given that we still haven't handled agriculture well, it's not surprising the others continue to be problems.
DQ has the same basic theory, but Weatherford provides evidence, evidence, and more evidence. But he also adds that civilization's dominance is already proving it's undoing. "The nation-state absorbed the remaining tribal people ... swallowed them but could not digest them. ...We should not mistake this one act (modern civilzation's dominance) for the whole drama of human history, nor should we assume that the present act is the final one just because it is before us at this moment. Much came before us and much remains to be enacted.""
Check out and/or Order Savages and Civilization from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Secrets Of Sacred Space by Chuck Pettis has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Matthew Paulus...and Matthew has this to say about the book: "Again, like Stone Circle by Rob Roy, learning about how and why our ancestors did the things they did may just open our eyes as to how they saw the world. This in turn could give us a new vision to follow that does not put us at odds with the world. Besides, this is just a plan fun topic for me."
Check out and/or Order Secrets Of Sacred Space from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Secrets of the Talking Jaguar by Martin Prechtel has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Kerry Ratza...and Kerry has this to say about the book: "autobiography of Martin Prechtel-the story of his life with the Maya in Guatemala and tribal living!"

- Secrets of the Talking Jaguar: a Mayan Shaman's Journey to the Heart of the Indigenous Soul by Martin Prechtel has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Bill Finney...and Bill has this to say about the book: "This book is about "keeping the interconnectedness of life alive by remembering". It is also about humans as one of the myriad living beings sustained by the earth in the law of life."
Check out and/or Order Secrets of the Talking Jaguar: a Mayan Shaman's Journey to the Heart of the Indigenous Soul from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed by James Scott has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mark Meritt...and Mark has this to say about the book: "An excellent account of how the best laid plans fail when a short-term, non-system view is taken. Almost a companion piece to Tenner's "Why Things Bite Back.""
Check out and/or Order Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Self Made Man by Jonathan Kingdon has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Gavin Hadaller...and Gavin has this to say about the book: "A rather heavy read for the layperson, it covers the evolution of mankind alongside his technology from an archeological perspective. "Human Evolution from Eden to Extinction?"
Kingdon is Professor of Zoology at Oxford University and an internationally known expert on evolution (even though the Kansas State school board hates it)he is a research scientist in primatology and evolutionary biology and is a regular visitor to Africa and the Middle East. His ideas and theories are powerful as well as insightful. If you read only one book about human evolution, read this one."
Check out and/or Order Self Made Man from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Seven Life Lessons of Chaos by John Briggs has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Zachary Vogt...and Zachary has this to say about the book: "Giving the philosophical application of chaos theory, it helps do develop a mind aware of the world around it."

- Shadows in the Sun : Travels to Landscapes of Spirit and Desire by Wade Davis has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Paul Lopez...and Paul has this to say about the book: "Wade Davis an anthropologist/ethno botanist trained at Harvard visits tribes of leaver peoples, and others. Gave me a more personal feel of the differences between leaver and taker life. This book made these peoples more real in my mind, not just an idea."
Check out and/or Order Shadows in the Sun : Travels to Landscapes of Spirit and Desire from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mark Meritt...and Mark has this to say about the book: "A great, in-depth exploration of non-human animals, especially other primates, showing that there is nothing that is truly unique about humans - a thought at the center of Quinn's work."
Check out and/or Order Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors- a Search For Who We Are by Carl Sagan has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jim Emerson...and Jim has this to say about the book: "Carl Sagan presents the history of our planet from the Big Bang until the present day, emphasizing the interrelatedness of all life on earth. There is a great chapter on the everyday life of a chimpanzee troup that is a little too humanlike for comfort. It was the basis if a sermon I delivered to my UU church in 1993"
Check out and/or Order Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors- a Search For Who We Are from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

- Shikasta by Doris Lessing has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Eilidh Benedetti...and Eilidh has this to say about the book: "The science fictionalised here is probably social anthropology, and while it is a grim look at a possible, very realistically possible future, it is one of those important books that can haunt you for years to come...

You will be educated on how unclean and dangerous Slaughterhouses really are and the dangers workers tackle every day there.... Inhumane Treatment doesn't do it justice, Unbelievable Blinded Apathy is more like it... Read this if you give a damn how infectious and greedy the USDA is!"
Check out and/or Order Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect and Inhumane Treatment Inside the U.S. Meat Industry from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

- Small is Beautiful by E.F. Shumancher has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Stephanie Bailey...and Stephanie has this to say about the book: "This book is about "Economics as if people mattered" written by a BUDDHIST economist. Almost paradoxical, yes - but a great way of thinking. It has statistical informtion about how we are eating up our resources at a fast rate and how you can not measure humans by Gross Domestic Product. It has a chapter about an actual society created that is limited civilization based on these Buddhist economic ideas."
Check out and/or Order Small is Beautiful from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Nathan Helm-Burger...and Nathan has this to say about the book: "This book, although a work of fiction, is a fairly accurate extension of the trends we see in society today. It poses a view of the future when all the large governments are dissolved into small idependent tribes, but corporate-owned and controlled tribes. It also presents the mostly fictional concept of society itself being a giant "Metavirus" made up of a conglomeration of mind viruses (which are real) which are made up of memes. It makes you think twice about trustingly, thoughtlessly, using the internet, and watching TV."
Check out and/or Order Snow Crash from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Solaris by Stanislav Lem has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Heike Rohde...and Heike has this to say about the book: "One of my all time favourites. I first read it 20 years ago and I still read it from time to time. One of the best novels showing the arrogance and dumbness of our culture. And the most wonderful and poetic horror-story-science-fiction-books I know. You see, I'm unable to describe it. But in the end you'll understand why we'll never be able to understand other cultures or other kinds of intelligence if we don't give up our strange idea we're the most wonderful creation ever."
Check out and/or Order Solaris from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Solviva by Anna Eadey has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Michele Nix...and Michele has this to say about the book: "It teaches ways to live more sustainably, not relying on outside agencies for utilities, etc. Growing food - using bunnies & chickens for body heat to heat the greenhouse in winter, etc."
Check out and/or Order Solviva from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Song of the Deer by Thunder Strikes has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Raven Taylor...and Raven has this to say about the book: "fresh perspective on the evolution of soul consciousness while remaining grounded in our practical day-to-day experiences. Your experiences are not your life."
Check out and/or Order Song of the Deer from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Sophies World by Jostein Gaardner has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Suheyl Yekenkurul...and Suheyl has this to say about the book: "Daniel Quinn makes you think, Jostein teaches you the art of thinking. You must be a thinker to begin the thinking process otherwise, you are like a doctor with a terminal illness. Or a dentist with bad teeth."
Check out and/or Order Sophies World from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Spiritual Life Savers by Gloria Benish has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Phyllis Linton...and Phyllis has this to say about the book: "The author of this book is a spiritual healer and has been assisting others to heal themselves for over 16 years now. Miracles abound in Gloria Benish's life and in the lives of those she helps as she is One with the consciousness of God most of the time...she is an instrument...a tool for God to use.
If we want to create a new world with sharing, compassion and love in abundance we have to also help ourselves.
We are all *healers*...we all have the ability to heal ourselves and assist others to heal themselves."
Check out and/or Order Spiritual Life Savers from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Spiritwalker: Messages from the Future by Hank Wesselman has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Myra Lou Harris...and Myra Lou has this to say about the book: "Hank Wesselman writes about visions he has received regarding our future. We return to our Leaver roots, and are forced to find ways other than technological to deal and cope with our surroundings and each other."
Check out and/or Order Spiritwalker: Messages from the Future from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Spontaneous Healing by Andrew Weil has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jaret Forman...and Jaret has this to say about the book: "Everything starts with individual accountability. Isn't that the main thing we've lost as a mass growing culture, peoples sense of worth, how we fit in to the big picture? Agriculture made it possible and now we are in a state of such growth that it's everyone for themselves, instead of for the community. Mass religions always seemed to me to be a great way to control the masses, or mass growth. Make the people accountable to something bigger than themselves instead of to themselves.
We all know that to fix things we all have to be in on it, each of us at a personal level. Let's start by understanding how our own bodies work. Our over all health and how we are in control of it, not eating what were told to and getting the medicine that we're told to take. Let's be our own doctors. Let's take care of ourselves.
This is a great book for understanding one's health and what is available out there. It's the Ishmael to understanding your own health."
Check out and/or Order Spontaneous Healing from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Stand on Zanzibar by John Brunner has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Nic Mason...and Nic has this to say about the book: "Written in 1968, Stand on Zanzibar is a prediction of what the future may have held for America and the world as a whole. Set in around 2010 the surprising thing about the book is not how much the author got wrong, but how his vision became a reality much sooner than he forsaw. This relates to Daniel Quinn's works because it acts as a counterpoint. To have seen how accurately someone in the past could have predicted current trends suggests that maybe we should pay more attention to the ideas presented in DQ's books"
Check out and/or Order Stand on Zanzibar from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Star Man's son, 2250 A.D. by Andre Norton has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Kenneth Fusco...and Kenneth has this to say about the book: "Written in 1952 this is my favorite classic sci-fi story. Humanity destroys itself and much of the world. But a few survive and life slowly creeps and crawls back into motion again. Only this time without the overwhelming opposition of an active "Taker" Mother Culture. A few nightmarish reminders of the past (cannibal mutants) are left which the sparse tribes of humans must contend with. But their biggest threat is each other. The story is mainly the struggle of a variety of tribal cultures of the future faced with either taking or leaving behind once and for all the ways of their ancestors(which is to say: you and I), those who in the story blew up the world. Needless to say it has a happy ending, though it is a close call."
Check out and/or Order Star Man's son, 2250 A.D. from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Steal This Book by Abbie Hoffman has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Melissa Reyes...and Melissa has this to say about the book: "Revolution for the hell of it: need I say more?"
Check out and/or Order Steal This Book from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse has been suggested by Ishmael Network member chris stapley...and chris has this to say about the book: "This is a richly intimate journey into the soul of an individual who is tormented internally with regards to ´how to live´. Essentially, the main character is a revolutionary spirit who detests EVERYTHING about his culture, and his personal challenge of how to satisfy his soul without living COMPLETELY outside of society is the premise, which you won´t soon forget.
The writing, as always with Hesse, is poetic yet powerful, and the struggle of one individual to live against seemingly everyone and everything in his society is a theme which readers of Quinn will undoubtedly be able to identify with. Simply, a GEM! Read it, and/or anything else by Hesse (who, incidentally, Quinn cites at the very beginning of ´Ishmael´)."
Check out and/or Order Steppenwolf from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Steps Toward Inner Peace by Peace Pilgrim has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Bill Mason...and Bill has this to say about the book: "An example of someone who "walked away.""
Check out and/or Order Steps Toward Inner Peace from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Still Life With Woodpecker by Tom Robbins has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Adam LaMontagne...and Adam has this to say about the book: "Tom Robbins' books should be read in conjunction with the wonderful books of Daniel Quinn. Robbins' novels describe the world in a way which Daniel Quinn would approve. He opens your mind and opens your heart. A wonderful read."
Check out and/or Order Still Life With Woodpecker from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.
- Stolen Continents by Ronald Wright has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Bruce Wilkinson...and Bruce has this to say about the book: "Relates to The Story of B.
