- Kabloona by Gontrain De Poncins has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Kristin Oliver...and Kristin has this to say about the book: "Kabloona is the story of one of the last Europeans to see an unspoiled, indigenous lifestyle; what makes it different from other books of its sort is that Gontrain went to live with the Eskimos of Canada's harshest regions simply out of desire, out of love. To be honest, he was a little obsessed, but it was encouraging that his intellectual curiosity fueled him to observe and experience, as opposed to the normal 'veni, vedi, vici' attitude so many other explorers promote. He wasn't there to change anything, just see. However, it isn't a scholastic anthropological study, it is the personal notes of a man on a quest to find happiness and himself. Also, the author was suprisingly self aware and worked to overcome his cultural bias, considering it took place before World War 1 when cultural elitism was nearly universal. Anyway, it was refreshing to see how people are so beautifully adapted, and how happy we are in a tribal enviroment."
