The default mode for our thinking is argument. Edward de Bono's work provides alternatives that are creative and constructive. While not at all similar to Quinn's work, de Bono provides tools that are essential for a positive revolution."
Check out and/or Order Parallel Thinking from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Pay It Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jennifer Sterling...and Jennifer has this to say about the book: "This book begins with a teacher and an assignment: "Think of an idea for world change, and put it into action." It's a novel about a twelve-year-old boy who takes this assignment to heart. Although the book doesn't espouse any of the theories or ideas found in Ishmael, it does present one compatible idea of it's own, perhaps best described by the author herself: " . . . it proves that you don't need much to change the entire world for the better. You can start with the most ordinary ingredients. You can start with the world you've got." This is a fantastic book, well worth reading."
Check out and/or Order Pay It Forward from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Stuart King...and Stuart has this to say about the book: "Freire, a South American author, writes about what could be translated to a taker lifestyle happening in southern america and how it is being sustained by what he calls the "Banking concept of education." Thoroughly and insightfully explaining how the educational system supports, maintains, and furthers the taker's vision (who he calls the oppressors), Freire "banking concept" illustrates beautifully the wrong way to educate (our current practices) and offers new systems and thoughts about education."
Check out and/or Order Pedagogy of the Oppressed from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • People of the Earth by W. Michael Gear has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Alan Thornhill...and Alan has this to say about the book: "Great story of a native people who "lost their way" -- a LOT of parallels to Takers as Daniel describes them."

  • People of the Lake: Mankind & Its Beginnings by Richard E Leakey has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mark Davern...and Mark has this to say about the book: "Supports & Substantiates Daniel Quinn's Works. Also, is a good beginning look at human origins, and social relations."
Check out and/or Order People of the Lake: Mankind & Its Beginnings from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn has been suggested by Ishmael Network member William Knudsen...and William has this to say about the book: "Howard Zinn presents U.S. history from the viewpoint of the people who were victimized by the elite class who appropriated this country. "
Check out and/or Order People's History of the United States from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Permaculture : A Designers' Manual by Bill Mollison has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Larry Kulick,L.Ac....and Larry has this to say about the book: "Permacluture is a design strategy that is based on what works for you in your region: i.e. site and client specific. It takes into account the entire community of life on your site and uses technology, skills, native and exotic foods that are appropriate to your site. "Permaculture is the conscious design of `cultivated` ecosystems that have the diversity, stability, & resilience of natural ecosystems. It is a harmonious integration of people into the landscape in such a way that the land grows in richness, productivity, and aesthetic beauty. - Permaculture is an ethical design system for creating human environments that are ecologically sound & economically viable. Permaculture systems provide for their own needs, do not exploit or pollute, & are therefore sustainable. -Peter Bane"

  • Permaculture in a Nutshell by Patrick Whitefield has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jason Thomas...and Jason has this to say about the book: "At a slim 80 pages, this is a wonderful introduction to the spirit and principles of permaculture. Very information dense yet easy and entertaining to read."
Check out and/or Order Permaculture in a Nutshell from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Peter Principle: Why Things Always Go Wrong, The by Laurence Peter and Raymond Hull has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Mark Meritt...and Mark has this to say about the book: "Peter refers to this book as the first study of "hierarchiology." While it doesn't deal with the evolution of hierarchies, it is absolutely extraordinary in its assessment of the inherently dysfunctional nature of hierarchies. Peter shows them to be inherently prone to incompetence and their participants to be often prone to boredom and dissatisfaction. Much of the material in here deals with elements that Quinn doesn't touch, providing great extra information and strong resonance with Quinn's works."
Check out and/or Order Peter Principle: Why Things Always Go Wrong, The from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Plagues of the Mind by Bruce Thornton has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Daniel Scott...and Daniel has this to say about the book: "Thornton attacks the myths on how we are to live, what is right and wrong, true and false. Check out and/or Order Plagues of the Mind from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Planet Simpson by Chris Turner has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Candice Zawoiski...and Candice has this to say about the book: "If you watch television at all (in my view the easiest way Mother Culture lures us back to sleep), you'll probably find as I do that "The Simpsons" is the only thing on TV nowadays worth watching. In Matt Groening's own words, the purpose of The Simpsons is to "entertain and subvert", and the main goal of the show is to get people to question authority. This book is much more than an analysis of a great TV show-its a critical analysis of Taker culture throughout the time The Simpsons has aired (mostly 90s). It thoroughly covers such Quinn-like issues such as the feelings of alienation and hopelessness of youth and the expresion of these feelings through alternative/grunge music and DIY and punk culture, the rebirth of social activism, and the corporate world and mindset. The Simpsons is unique in that every week it reaches the mainstream with the message (although sometimes hidden) to subvert the dominant paradigm (i.e. Taker culture)."
Check out and/or Order Planet Simpson from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Planet Two: Earth in a Higher Dimention...Are You Ready? by Lynn Grabhorn has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Melanie Lister...and Melanie has this to say about the book: "This book describes a world that I'm sure everyone who reads Ismael would give anything to live on..and its real. "
Check out and/or Order Planet Two: Earth in a Higher Dimention...Are You Ready? from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Plausible Worlds: Possibility and Understanding in History and the Social Sciences by Geoffrey Hawthorn has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Matthew Martinkovic...and Matthew has this to say about the book: "Offers a brilliant insight into the world of counterfactual examination and explanation in history and the social sciences"
Check out and/or Order Plausible Worlds: Possibility and Understanding in History and the Social Sciences from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Polyamory : The New Love Without Limits : Secrets of Sustainable Intimate Relationships by Deborah M, Dr. Anapol has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Ayran Aluna...and Ayran has this to say about the book: "There is no ONE 'right way' for healthy, durable, loving relationships among people -- and for the construction of stable loving environments for children (so lacking in 'modern' industrialised societies). Polyamory suggests that any and every form of loving relationship based on honesty and respect for others, including whatever form of 'sexual' intimacies may be involved, is not only healthy and desirable but in effect an essential element in the development of our full humanity - unconstrained by the ('miserable', fearful, dogmatic, patriarchal, controlling, sex-negative) ideologies and "religions" of the Dominator/Taker Cultures. 'Responsible and respectful non-monogamy', as it is sometimes called, breaks the last taboo - the fundamental 'sexual' control-mechanism of Patriarchal/Androcratic/Dominator/Taker Cultures. That is why it also provokes the greatest and loudest cries of abuse and indignation by outraged defenders of so-called 'family-values' and 'morals' -- who overtly, or instinctively, see and feel that open and 'unlimited' loving, including the 'sexual' forms, is the most powerful (and hence for them the most 'dangerous') tool for dismantling all old orthodox structures based on 'power-over' and control. What evokes the greatest fear can sometimes be a most powerful tool for our awakening and liberation -- I suggest that 'polyamory' is one of those."
Check out and/or Order Polyamory : The New Love Without Limits : Secrets of Sustainable Intimate Relationships from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Katie Field...and Katie has this to say about the book: "Pope Joan is a really cool book and you should read it because Joan is a really good character and a good role model."
Check out and/or Order Pope Joan from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Population Politics by Virginia Abernethy, PhD has been suggested by Ishmael Network member josh trutt...and josh has this to say about the book: "One thing we all wish D.Q. had more time for is the scientific evidence for some of his more "controversial" ideas. Abernethy provides much of that. This is the definitive case against the "Demographic Transition Theory"-- the outdated notion that people will lower their fertility rates once they reach upper-middle class. Abernethy shows dozens of examples that support D.Q's contention that humans are like every other animal-- we respond to plentiful resources by increasing reproduction, and we respond to a limit in resources by decreasing reproduction. In my opinion, this book and The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken are the two strongest must-reads alongside Ishmael and B."
Check out and/or Order Population Politics from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Ryan Burke...and Ryan has this to say about the book: "This book relates to Daniel Quinn's vision in that it speaks the truth. Not only that but it gives people a clear and concise vision of the suffering that Taker's experience and the joy and peace that comes from giving up the Taking, and the I, and the ego that is ultamitely doing the taking. If you can relate to Ishmael then you can relate to "The Power of Now""
Check out and/or Order Power of Now from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Power: A Novel by Linda Hogan has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Jody Mosher...and Jody has this to say about the book: "This is an incredibly beautiful book. A story of walking away from what doesn't work. A story of what "Power" really means."
Check out and/or Order Power: A Novel from Amazon.com! You can also order from a local bookstore by using BookSense.

  • Primitive Technology A book Of Earth Skills by David Wescott has been suggested by Ishmael Network member Matthew Paulus...and Matthew has this to say about the book: "The Society of Primitive Technology and Native Awareness is a wonderful organization I recently discovered dedicated to researching and teaching skills used by not just our primitive ancestors, but by modern tribal peoples all over the world. In learning these skills, we learn how these people related to the world. "Practicing these primitive methods will lead the seeker towards a tangible, raw connection with the ancient past, with nature's resources and, ultimately, with the creative forces that constructed the foundation of man's survival on the planet.""
