Alan Thornhill: A Letter from Washington, D.C.
Dear Friends and Colleagues-- After eight and a half years as Executive Director of SCB (Society for Conservation Biology), I am moving on to a new challenge. I have accepted a position as an advisor in the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) starting 3 March--specifically I will be the first ever Science Advisor to the Director of the Minerals Management Services (MMS). For those of you who don't know it, MMS is the DOI Bureau responsible for managing the renewable energy, oil and gas, and mineral resources offshore. This is a huge opportunity for me and I am thrilled to be joining the current administration's team. The number of science advisors in this administration is unprecedented and it indicates a real commitment to ensuring science has a voice at the table--I am honored to be called to duty. Best wishes-- Alan Thornhill
